vintage inspired tv series

Recently appeared so many new series where women are jumping in these lingerie pieces from 50s. Most of them are based in 60s and these times are also propagated in fashion magazines. For me it means screaming on the street - You look great! it's 60s! or Have you seen that? It's 60s style.
I know that whatever appears in media becomes the absolute truth.
But no one can hide the fact that this time brought trapezium form, Twiggy, geometrical patterns, pink or coral lipsticks, horrible-terrible tights and mini !!! The only exception is early 60s.
Since it's not my favourite era I started to ignore all comments about it, however still I appreciate compliments.

If you belong to vintage planes fan club this series is for you.
Pan Am in trying hard to show that stewardesses were definitively not discriminated but powerful women! Spies and romances that's what you get.
You don't get nice prepared scenery. No amazing hairstyles, no inspiring make - up, no clothes you want to wear now! immediately! Actresses look somehow a bit ridiculous in these not perfectly finished costumes.
And for sure soon if not already for a small fortune you can buy Pan Am blue bag and run around the city with it!

Again in 60s. Again powerful women working in Playboy Club. Everything could be better and it is a bit more than Pan Am. 90% is occupied by bunny costumes which doesn't make a difference if the action is actually in 60s or any other time.
But producers invest much more in hairdressers!
Main male character... has the voice of Don Draper. I'm pretty sure that's one of strong advertising points and still the best part.

The Absolute Winner. The beginning is the best because it's still in 50s. New season will be Again in 60s which is changing the fashion and hairstyles to less impressive - for me.
But the series is the winner of second plan, not mentioning the first one. Everyone look great and perfect. There's no detail that is left behind. It's a visual masterpiece!!!
And none of existing series will never reach even half of this perfection.

I have to admit I haven't sacrificed much time and stuck on 1st season only. It's in 20s and even though it's a very graceful subject still I wasn't amazed with pictures, scenery and costumes.

Mad Men is the winner !!!

Dita's collection

Dita von Teese posted very useful advice regarding How To Wear Your Stockings:

Stocking tips: Always buy more than one pair of the same style, so if once gets a run, just take another from a new package. Stockings are superior to pantyhose not just because they are more beautiful and feel more free, but because chances are, you may run one leg, but not the other, so the pair is not all lost when you have backups pairs. Next, do as the French do, and put the garter belt on FIRST! Panties (if any) go over the top so you can easily remove them for whatever reason and still have that lovely stocking and garter belt frame. Authentic fully-fashioned seamed stockings never have any lycra, therefore they have that lovely rasp of nylon, the welt with a keyhole in back, and of course, they have an authentic stitched seam and a cuban or french heel. Your garter belt must have stability to keep the seams straight; look for ones with six straps rather than four, one that is wide and sits firmly in place at the waist. Girdles and corsets accomplish this too. The stockings should frame the pelvis, not be too long, nor too short, but the top part of the stocking should rise to about mid-thigh. My signature stockings are made on the true vintage 1940s era mills, with every detail in place. Beware of faux seams and lycra! Welcome to the Cult of the Fully-fashioned Nylon Stocking! Accept nothing less!

And that's true. However some garter belts simply look terrible with panties wore over. Nylon stockings give you one and only feeling, are ridiculously expensive and no lycra imitation can replace them. There are only few pairs produced per hour that's why the price is around 20 EUR, 16GBP or 30 USD. Dita's collection used to be twice more expensive so I gave up on that long time ago. But not any more! I just checked and Secrets in Lace is selling them for 32 - 36 USD which is a surprise.

However it's still unavailable in Europe, which leaves us with Eleganti and Gio.
I'd recommend to have a break from Gio since last few pairs I bought were with holes, different length or simply unfinished welt. My favourite shop Stockingshq sent me a replacement, informed that they have few more customers with the same problem and the whole story had a happy ending.

Getting to the point ... not so long time ago Dita was involved in wonderbra collection.
There's no doubt she is stunning as always. She does a great job and is definitively presenting the brand in the most possible glamorous way. But it is also a bit of irony that artificial bust is advertising a perfect bra for all demanding women no matter the size and shape.
Because how does the collection really treats natural busts?

- with balcony bras which are sliding down from breasts
- with satin plunge bras that go smaller in sizes than the rest of the collection
However the one in dots and with movable straps and ribbons are one of my favourites.
And now... about 'looking for six straps garter belt'... the collection has belts and girdles with only 4 straps, so support is far from desired.

Of course whatever Dita is promoting I'm interested so I ended up with many bras - half of it I had to return, unfortunately - and garter belts.
It will happen again when only her new collection will be released.
Hopefully this time there will be min. 6 straps garter belt with panties wore over and cup sizes not only DD but even E if again some bras will appear to be smaller than the rest from the same line.

Mr G. on the wedding

You have to be really naive and limited to think that what you wear is meaningless and unimportant. Clothes that we choose every day send  a message. Everything you do or think is right there displayed to others. Nr.1 They'll judge you by the look.

If you wear tight white trousers with sticking out or just seen through g string, even with extra glimmering gadgets that you think is glamorous, together with tiny pink top – even fallowing the rule max. 2 colours -  people most likely will take you as a hooker. If you add tanned/ burnt face, pink lipstick  and long nails, with flowers and rhinestones, so long that make you disabled, surely they’ll think so. It occurred to me recently that most of these girls don’t have hooker – wanna – be – look target.

What we wear is as important as what colour we wear. What coloristic type are we?
In contrasts you can easily disappear if your natural shades are rather pale or pastels.
Don’t wear white shoes! Unless you’re Tyra Banks or Naomi. (If you do search http://www.bialekozaczki.pl/ perhaps you’re there already.)
Of course gadgets! glasses make you look smart – that’s obvious. Long, hanging woollen bag gives you hippie touch. Clutch bag makes you more acceptable if you’re dresses up as 100% granny. The most important is to be aware of making a decision.

Mr G.
My boyfriend’s best friend…let’s say Mr G. - he has some requirements about his name spelling, something with s or z in the end so I'll make it short.
So mr. G appeared on his friend’s wedding looking like a homeless. It is his general daily and the only style that suppose to express his ignorance and ‘I’m over this and that and everything’ posture. But when he celebrated that day in his common outfit he interpreted this as ‘they want me to feel comfortable – Of course!’.
Of course! During their wedding there’s no point to show a bit of respect. There’s no point to put any effort to give a bow to their preparation, celebration and all event which was supposed to be not the ordinary one…at least for them.
Not for Mr G.
Mr G. got confused. He thought this wedding day is actually celebration of Him!

He performed in washed and asymmetrically stretched T-shirt, in probably more than used and reused jeans longer than himself – in the end he collected with his trouser legs all dirt, mud and everything you can imagine to meet on the sidewalk – extremely hairy which gave him a look of unwashed and on top of it – just like a last touch of lipstick – 5m long hand made (badly hand made) looking scarf. Everything in these washed-out yellowish, greenish, reggae colours, not really flattering in Mr G's case. This way he decided to celebrate the wedding of him and himself.

I only regret he didn’t get the solo dance – before the married couple did - with trolley filled up with plastic bottles and pieces of used newspapers.

Yes! to Art. No! to Mr G.

If you wish to be extravagant … be! But don’t mix up extravagance with Mr G.
Mr G desperately asks for attention and like megalomaniac guru is looking for blind sheeps praising him in unquestionable love. He doesn’t deal with disapprovals and objections. That’s why Mr G may sound extravagant but in reality he’s hiding himself in the crowd everyday all day. Sticking out his nose only when he feels he’s admired. You can see it when you look at him. He objects any traditional form but have no guts to replace it with anything else. He becomes just a small clone of someone who stands next to him.
It might be tempting... to fallow his steps. As every guru of any sect he will force his ideas on you. He believes he's the absolute power and knowledge. You might feel like breaking. In the end everyone - even Mr G. wants to be accepted...somehow.

Extravagance and glamour will go only with brains.
Think! Before you leave the house.
Think! Before you appear on someone’s wedding.
Put pieces of your character in your clothes. It’s not war time, everything is available in every price range. Look around and take a second to compare yourself to others. You’re different - obviously - so why not to accent it. Wisely.

"Boredom is the biggest disease on the world."

Yes! to extravagance and glamour.
No! to Mr G.

Midnight Face

I decided!
I'm going to cut my hair.
In few weeks... because I just visited my hairdresser.
'Midnight' and Claudette Colbert inspired me yesterday night.

Just the only risk I'm taking is to make my face similar to full moon. I tend to look really chubby.
So I would so appreciate an opinion or two.... if you appear here accidentally....
What do You think ?
Am I really close to give myself a Midnight Face?

spending time on youtube ...

I really can't believe that since I've moved I'm still without internet...
So I'm waiting patiently spending my time on watching all old movies I can find on youtube and still looking for inspiration.
Since I've found Xilisoft Download Youtube Video (I know it sounds like advertisement...) I don't have to worry that something I'm interested in will suddenly disappear!
What I can recommend you is:

Hard not to buy it !

I love 50s cardigans ! I’ve found amazing shop with all kind of vintage furniture and some vintage clothes here in Northampton.
I already hunted there intensively red Marks and Spencer coat. Too big but since I've got the idea to tailor some of my clothes…I’ll pick it up on Wednesday!
So usually I come in and see it immediately. I have photographic memory so when I saw this label:

I knew design will be gorgeous.
First one I won on eBay of course. It had small tiny hole that I fixed and wool is a bit thinner and more fragile than the ‘new one’ I just bought.

I know already that Peter Scott has used ‘new kind’ of wool, as advertised: washable, shrink and resistant – Pure New Wool.
...I think that my green one shrank a bit… I believe that Everything can be hand washed. EVERYTHING.
Doesn’t matter that I ruined one dress by washing it with another one too blue to be washed together with anything else. Also some knickers I accidentally damaged…I really shouldn’t have soaked it with darker lingerie.

Still Peter Scott design gives truly 50s shape. Just like turned triangle.
So I got myself loch blue Peter Scott cardigan.

No, it’s not like the one I already have. It’s greyish blue. Excellent condition.
With original label which means, probably, it has never been worn.

About never worn items…I have this 40s brown dress. My boyfriend hates it because it's too granny style as he calls it. Well I like it. I just read somewhere that when Dita von Teese is choosing things to her house she's guided by the question : Would my Grandmother buy it?
Not that I do that but for my boyfriend I reach mostly this kind of effect.
It arrived to me from eBay seller with original labels.

After I abducted Peter Scott cardigan I noticed 100% cashmere dirty pink - another one. Again with original label.

Great condition but a bit mécheux at the back. So it will need a bit shaving and will be just as new!

Also thanks God for PayPal! As eBay addict I have had a lot of unpleasant experience. PayPal helped to get my money back so many times.
The turquoise dress I wrote about last time was advertised as:

CONDITION

Great wearable condition, one or two small food marks to the right side of the bodice and skirts which I am sure would go with a dry clean.

So I did spent 15GBP for dry cleaning and more orange dots revealed themselves all over. I opened a case and seller informed me he’s so sorry that: ‘send the dress back and I’ll refund dress and shipping costs’. When I asked him what about dry cleaning costs – finally if you’re so sure food marks will go off why don’t you clean yourself before selling? – he refunded it without a word.I guess I'll work on it a bit now. What I do usually is buying thread in exact dress colour. So all my mistakes won't be visible so much since it's the same colour...I figured.

I’m not a tailor however my grandmother is but I know absolutely nothing about it. I was quite grown-up when I sewed my first button. But I really like to take care of all my vintage clothes. I enjoy keeping them alive, wear them, fix as much as I can, wash and iron.
Maybe there’s no other like this one? I have a feeling of responsibility. If it lasted so many years I can’t be the one who’ll ruin it. If your wool cardigan is 50 it is better to count the time when you leave it in water to get rid of this characteristic oldie smell. Otherwise you’ll take it out three sizes smaller.

About the smell… my friend helped me finally to discover mystery of
What’s - this – smell – dress which is one of my favourites.

Naphthalene.
I’m fighting it and still can’t help but wonder Do people feel it too ?

Daily Things

And again I spent today lots of money online… I threw 80 GBP only for silk knickers from Ayten Gasson.

Also I’m happy to say that my boyfriend is Not reading my blog at all.
But even without him I always feel guilty when spend some money on myself. At the same time I can’t stop doing that. So finally I accepted the feeling and take this guilt as the receipt which goes with…
Amazing silk lingerie!! They’re using original vintage printed silk and lace to produce these miracles !! So I ended up buying even another pair as I already have. Strange.

Accidentally I won vintage nylon petticoat. Without constant internet access I have some difficulties with following my ‘winning for me’ website. I’m not so sad about it though..

Another eBay dress I won appeared to be all in stains and I mean not removable stains.. I have no idea why sellers cut their own wings by stating: these are just food marks. I’m convinced it will go away with dry cleaning.

That’s what I did and in the end I decided to take my friends advice.. huge lego fan, experienced eBay buyer and seller who’s opening directly a PayPal case as a first step anytime whenever anything goes wrong. There was a time when I used to be nice.
I used to write an email first. ‘Hi! Unfortunately something’s wrong with your item…’ and I’ve waited for two days. Than again another email and a week time. In the end I did open the case and got responds like : ‘Oh sorry, I was on holiday…’ ‘I didn’t have internet…’ or ‘I haven’t noticed your emails.’
So I’m waiting now. To escalate in the claim.
And the dress…well...
Fortunately there are some good bids:

And this is The Back !
